History
The Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame was created in 1951 by the Milwaukee Arena (now U.S. Cellular Arena).1 It was created to "honor outstanding sports figures whose achievements earned them special acclaim."2 The hall of fame inducts new members every two years when it holds an induction ceremony to reveal a large bronze plaque immortalizing each inductee.2 The plaques were originally available only to paying customers at the Milwaukee Arena.3
The Wisconsin Sports Development Corporation (WSDC) became the owner of the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. For the 50th anniversary in 2001, the WSDC constructed a Wisconsin Athletic Walk of Fame outside of the U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee. The bronze plaques are on permanent display for visitors.2

There are almost 130 people inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame. Inductees come from a variety of sports, including auto racing, football, basketball, water skiing, bowling, baseball, and bicycling, and various Olympic sports.1 The nominee committee consists of WSDC board members, Wisconsin media, and current Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame members.7 In 2002 WSDC began a program where it invited the people of Wisconsin to vote for an inductee into the Hall of Fame.2 Fuzzy Thurston, a former six-time world champion Green Bay Packers football player, received the most votes.2
