An open file format is a published specification for storing digital data, usually maintained by a standards organization, which can therefore be used and implemented by anyone. For example, an open format can be implementable by both proprietary and free and open source software, using the typical licenses used by each. In contrast to open formats, closed formats are considered trade secrets. Open formats are also called free file formats, if they are not encumbered by any copyrights, patents, trademarks or other restrictions (for example, if they are in the public domain) so that anyone may use it at no monetary cost for any desired purpose.1 Contents 1 Specific definitions 1.1 Sun Microsystems 1.2 US Government 1.3 State of Minnesota 1.4 Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1.5 The Linux Information Project 2 Examples of open formats 2.1 Multimedia 2.2 Text 2.3 Archiving and compression 2.4 Other 3 See also 4 References 5 External links // Specific definitions Sun Microsystems

LibreOffice and support for Microsoft file formats

Linux Pro Magazine: "One of the intriguing aspects of LibreOffice, the OpenOffice.org fork, is that everything is open to debate. However, this atmosphere also means that the old debate about supporting proprietary Microsoft formats -- specifically the newer OOXML format -- is being revived."
