It replaced Greenock and Inverclyde and the Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm areas from West Renfrewshire for the 2005 general election. The previous MP, David Cairns of the Labour Party, died on 9 May 2011, after suffering from acute pancreatitis. The ensuing Inverclyde by-election was called for 30 June 2011, and was won by Labour's Iain McKenzie.
